Welcome to The University of Chicago - Department of Surgery

BruceThe Department of Surgery at The University of Chicago offers a full range of academic surgical programs, organized into eleven clinical sections. Our full-time faculty of more than ninety members conduct clinical and basic research in all surgical specialties and offer a wide variety of post graduate educational opportunities in virtually every area of modern surgical practice. Our highly personalized residency training programs attract the best and brightest from around the country and the world. A majority of our graduates continue to contribute to scholarship through academic careers here and elsewhere.

U
nderlying these research and training programs is an extensive clinical program. Each year, University of Chicago surgeons perform more than 17,000 surgical procedures and provide outpatient and consultative care through more than 75,000 outpatient visits. Current programs in heart transplantation, congenital heart surgery, minimally invasive and robotic surgery and cancer treatment are considered among the nation's best. Historically, the Department has pioneered breakthroughs in surgical care and research including the first US living related liver transplant, low morbidity cerebrovascular interventions and innovative treatments for inflammatory bowel disease. We also were honored by a Nobel Prize in Medicine, presented to our revered Charles Huggins in 1968. Our teams of basic scientists and physician-scientists account for more the $6 million in research expenditures in the most recent year.

We hope this web page provides you with a useful introduction to our Department and captures, to some extent, the excitement of our enterprise.
